LIFE EXPECTANCY FIGURES UNDERLINE LABOUR'S FAILURES IN GLASGOW - BAXENDALE

12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Wed 21st Oct 2009

Liberal Democrat Candidate for the Glasgow North East by-election Eileen Baxendale has said that new life expectancy figures out today underline how badly Glasgow has been let down by the Labour party.

The latest figures from the Office of National Statistics have shown that Glasgow City was the area which recorded the lowest average life expectancy at birth in the UK.

Commenting, Mrs Baxendale said:

"These figures underline Labour's failure in Glasgow. People in this proud city are being badly let down by the Labour party.

"After generations of Labour rule in Glasgow, men and women here continue to have the lowest life expectancy rates in the UK.

"The answer to increasing life expectancy is to tackle the root causes of poverty and close the health gap. These policies lie at the heart of the Liberal Democrat commitment to fairness.

"We are the only party that offer a real alternative for people in Glasgow North East who are fed up being overlooked by their politicians."
